Smile Makeover Timeline: Week by Week

Week 0 — Consultation

60–90 minutes. Photos, a digital scan and x-rays are taken, and the dentist listens to what you want. You may see two or three possible design directions on a simulation of your own face. No drilling, no pressure.

Week 1 — Digital smile design

The proposed smile is built in 3D software, combining your face, teeth and gum line (digital smile design explained). You see it before any commitment, and changes are made until you are happy with what you see on screen.

Week 2 — Prep visit and trial smile

The prep visit takes roughly 2–4 hours depending on the number of teeth. Teeth are gently reduced (typically 0.3–0.5 mm for porcelain; none for composite), scanned again, and temporary veneers are placed on all prepared teeth.

You walk out with a working smile. You live with it, eat with it, photograph it, and come back in a week with observations — shape, length, colour, speech. This is the stage where changes are simplest to make.

Week 3 — Refinement (if needed)

Based on your feedback, the digital file is adjusted and the laboratory re-mills or re-prints accordingly. This week is sometimes unnecessary if the trial was already right.

Week 4 — Final bonding

A 2–4 hour visit. The temporaries come off, and each final veneer is tried in with water first, then with try-in paste, and then bonded, usually under rubber-dam isolation. You leave with the finished smile.

Week 5 — Bite refinement

A 20-minute check. Any small bite contact that feels "high" is polished. If you grind, a scan or impression is taken for a custom nightguard.

Week 6 — Nightguard delivery

If a nightguard was made, it is fitted and checked, and you start wearing it nightly (night guards).

Why not faster?

Some clinics advertise "smile in a day" — and for composite veneers, that's genuinely possible. For porcelain, a proper design-and-trial process usually takes 3–5 weeks from preparation to final bonding, plus a short follow-up, because:

1. Laboratory fabrication of porcelain veneers typically takes 5–10 working days
2. Living with the trial smile is one of the most reliable ways to catch design problems before the porcelain is made
3. The bite check after placement needs 1–2 weeks of adaptation first

Preparing for the day

• No whitening for 2 weeks before final shade matching (can you whiten veneers and crowns?)
• Plenty of hydration on the day of bonding
• Comfortable clothes and a good playlist or podcast — expect a few hours in the chair

After the makeover

Follow the veneers aftercare rules. Book your first cleaning visit at 3 months, then every 4–6 months thereafter.

Common questions

What happens at a smile consultation?

Photographs and a digital scan are taken, you discuss what you want to change, a digital preview shows the proposed result and you leave with a written treatment plan. It is a planning visit: you can take the plan away and decide later.

How many appointments does a smile makeover take, and how long is each?

Typically five to eight visits over roughly one to two months. The consultation and design visits are short, the scan visit takes under an hour, and the preparation visit is the longest at roughly 2–4 hours in the chair (you leave with temporaries). Final placement is another 2–4 hours, and the bite check is a 20-minute visit. Between preparation and final placement you live with the temporaries and note any shape, colour or length changes you want.

What is a temporary veneer?

A temporary (provisional) veneer is a resin version placed at the same visit as tooth preparation and worn for one to two weeks while the laboratory makes the final veneers. It protects the prepared tooth and previews the final shape and length, giving you a chance to refine the design before the porcelain is made.

What is a dental wax-up, and is it still used?

A wax-up is a physical model of the proposed restorations, sculpted in wax on a model of your teeth. It shows the planned shape and length of new crowns or veneers before any tooth is prepared, and it is used to get the patient's approval of the design. Today the same planning is often done digitally, with a digital smile design preview replacing or supplementing the traditional wax model.

Practical decision guide

Cosmetic dentistry is strongest when the smile plan starts with healthy teeth and gums, not with a material choice. Before committing to a visible change, confirm the diagnosis, preview the result on your own face, and understand what tooth structure will or will not be removed.

Check this first

• Gum health, cavities, bite forces, grinding history, and old restorations.
• Whether whitening, bonding, alignment, veneers, or crowns is the least-invasive option that meets the goal.
• How the proposed shade and tooth shape will look in daylight, photos, and normal conversation.

When to book sooner

• The tooth is chipped, dark after trauma, sensitive, mobile, or changing colour quickly.
• You are being offered irreversible treatment without x-rays, gum screening, photos, or a trial smile.
• You grind at night and no nightguard or bite plan is included.

Topic-specific notes

• For cosmetic work, the most protective sequence is health check, photos, smile preview, trial or mock-up where appropriate, then final treatment. Irreversible tooth preparation should not be the first step in the conversation.

Questions to ask at the appointment

• Can I see a digital preview or trial smile before irreversible preparation?
• How much enamel will be removed, and is there a lower-prep alternative?
• What happens if the restoration chips, stains, or needs replacement later?
