When to Schedule Cosmetic Dentistry: Timing Guide

Timing cosmetic dental work around the calendar, events, Botox or rhinoplasty, weight change and smoking, with a simple personal planning checklist.

Key takeaways

  • Allow roughly six to eight weeks from a veneer consultation to a finished, bite-checked result, and longer if whitening, gum treatment or aligners come first.
  • Finish about three months before a wedding and at least six weeks before major photography.
  • Let the face settle after Botox, lip filler, nose surgery or major weight loss, because tooth length and width are chosen relative to the face.
  • Smoking, decay, gum disease and some medical conditions change the order of treatment, so every timeline starts with a check-up.

Time of year and the 6–8 week veneer timeline

In Dubai, the cooler months, roughly October to April, can be a comfortable time for a longer cosmetic course. Mid-December and the school holidays can clash with family events and photographs, so starting in October or November, or again in January or February, often gives a clear run. During Ramadan, appointment times shift around fasting and iftar, as dental care during Ramadan explains. Paradise Dental Clinic is open every day from 10:00 to 20:00, so longer visits can be booked at a comfortable time of day.

For porcelain veneers, allow roughly six to eight weeks from consultation to a finished, checked result: records, design approval, preparation with temporary veneers, time living with the temporaries, final bonding, a bite check and room for refinements. The week-by-week sequence is in the smile makeover timeline. Any whitening of the surrounding teeth comes first, with a pause of around two weeks so the shade settles before the veneer colour is matched. Final photographs are usually taken about two weeks after placement, once the gum margins have settled.

Planning around weddings, photography and travel

Work backwards from the fixed date. Reasonable buffers are:

EventAim to finish treatmentWhy
WeddingAbout 3 months beforeRoom for adjustments, a remake or gum settling
Major photographyAt least 6 weeks beforeGums settle and any bite changes are complete
Long trip or business travelNot between preparation and final placementTemporary veneers can loosen and need a quick repair

Temporary veneers are only lightly attached so they can be removed, which makes them more fragile than the finished work, and a loose one abroad means finding a local dentist. A fuller countdown for couples is in the pre-wedding dental checklist.

Short-notice prep: interviews, photoshoots, public speaking

For a job interview, presentation or photoshoot a few weeks away, a short routine usually achieves more than a rushed major treatment:

  • About two weeks before: whitening, if you want it. In-chair whitening typically costs AED 1,500–3,500 and take-home trays AED 800–1,500. Any sensitivity usually settles within days and the shade has time to stabilise; clinic vs home whitening compares the two.
  • About one week before: a professional cleaning and polish, typically AED 400–800, to remove surface stain and tartar.
  • In between: limit coffee, tea, red wine, cola and strongly coloured curries, or rinse with water after them, especially straight after whitening.
  • On the day: drink water, because a dry mouth makes the lips catch on the teeth and affects breath.

A small chip on a front tooth can often be repaired with composite bonding in a single visit, but avoid starting anything irreversible in the last few days before an important event. If you speak in public regularly, deal with whatever makes you hold back your smile, whether colour, a chipped edge or a gap.

After Botox or facial injectables

Botulinum toxin changes how the facial muscles move, and its effect usually reaches full strength over about two weeks. Smile design depends on seeing your usual expression, so wait around two weeks after injections before design photographs, a trial smile or final veneer appointments.

Lip filler matters even more, because it changes how much tooth shows when you smile and speak. Let filler settle before the design is finalised, avoid new injections around the lips or jaw between the design stage and final placement, and tell your dentist and your injector about each other's plans so appointments can be sequenced.

After rhinoplasty or facial surgery

Tooth length and width are chosen relative to the proportions of the whole face, and the nose is part of that balance. The NHS notes that it can take several months to see the full effect of nose reshaping, and up to six months for the swelling to go completely. Wait at least three months, and ideally until your surgeon confirms the result has settled, before starting smile design. After jaw surgery, definitive cosmetic work normally waits until the bite is stable, because veneers designed for the old bite may not suit the new one.

After major weight loss

Significant weight loss changes the fullness of the cheeks and the contour of the lips, which changes how much tooth shows and how wide the smile looks. A design made part-way through can look too long or too wide once the face settles, so wait until your weight has been stable, often for six months or more. If weight loss involved repeated vomiting or acid reflux, have the enamel checked for erosion first, as explained in the guide to tooth wear and erosion.

Smokers: staining, healing and cessation timing

Smoking stains natural enamel and composite resin, raises the risk of gum disease and recession, slows healing after any surgical step and increases the risk of mouth cancer. The CDC notes that smoking weakens the body's defences against gum infection, and that quitting helps the gums heal after treatment.

Before a makeover, smokers typically need a professional clean and scale, with any gum inflammation brought under control. The World Health Organization reports that people who stop smoking about four weeks or more before surgery have a lower risk of complications, so if your plan includes gum surgery, extractions or implants, stop at least a month beforehand and stay stopped through healing. If you continue to smoke:

  • Porcelain resists staining much better than composite, so it is usually the more practical choice for veneers.
  • Gum margins may darken or recede over time, exposing the edges of restorations.
  • More frequent hygiene visits, often every three months, help control staining and gum problems.

Stopping first gives a far more stable result. Your dentist or doctor can point you to cessation support, and smoking and oral health covers the wider effects.

Health conditions that change timing

Cosmetic work is elective, so it waits until the mouth and body are ready:

  • Decay and gum disease are treated first. Restorations placed over inflamed gums or active decay do not last, and the gum line can change as the gums heal.
  • Diabetes that is poorly controlled slows healing; stable control comes before any surgical step.
  • Pregnancy: many dentists suggest postponing elective cosmetic treatment such as whitening until after the birth, while routine check-ups and cleaning continue.
  • Blood thinners, bone medications and cancer treatment can change the timing of anything surgical, such as gum contouring or extractions.

The details are in dental treatment with a medical condition. Tell your dentist about every medication and diagnosis at the first visit.

Building a personal timeline with your dentist

Start from your date and work backwards. A typical sequence:

  1. Check-up and cleaning, with x-rays where needed.
  2. Foundation treatment such as fillings, gum treatment or root canal treatment, with time for healing.
  3. Alignment, if teeth are crowded or spaced. Aligner treatment usually takes months, so it sets the earliest start for veneers.
  4. Whitening of the teeth that will stay natural, then about two weeks for the shade to settle.
  5. Design and trial smile, including any gum contouring.
  6. Veneers or bonding, then a bite check and, if you grind, a custom nightguard.
  7. A buffer before the event for adjustments.

Bring your key dates to the consultation: events, travel, Ramadan, planned facial treatments and any upcoming surgery. The clinic's general dentists can help turn them into a treatment sequence, and typical fees for each step are on the pricing page.

Practical decision guide

Cosmetic dentistry is strongest when the smile plan starts with healthy teeth and gums, not with a material choice. Before committing to a visible change, confirm the diagnosis, preview the result on your own face, and understand what tooth structure will or will not be removed.

Check this first

  • Gum health, cavities, bite forces, grinding history, and old restorations.
  • Whether whitening, bonding, alignment, veneers, or crowns is the least-invasive option that meets the goal.
  • How the proposed shade and tooth shape will look in daylight, photos, and normal conversation.

When to book sooner

  • The tooth is chipped, dark after trauma, sensitive, mobile, or changing colour quickly.
  • You are being offered irreversible treatment without x-rays, gum screening, photos, or a trial smile.
  • You grind at night and no nightguard or bite plan is included.

Topic-specific notes

  • For cosmetic work, the most protective sequence is health check, photos, smile preview, trial or mock-up where appropriate, then final treatment. Irreversible tooth preparation should not be the first step in the conversation.

Questions to ask at the appointment

  • Can I see a digital preview or trial smile before irreversible preparation?
  • How much enamel will be removed, and is there a lower-prep alternative?
  • What happens if the restoration chips, stains, or needs replacement later?

Dubai patient note

For Dubai cosmetic treatment, ask for a written plan that separates consultation, scans, mock-up, treatment, nightguard, warranty terms, and maintenance visits. If a clinician or facility is unfamiliar, verify licensing through DHA before starting.
