Why professional whitening is different

Whitening products sold in pharmacies and online use very low peroxide concentrations, because stronger formulations are restricted to clinical use under a licensed dentist. That restriction exists for a reason: professional-strength gel reaches deeper discoloration, but it needs to be applied to healthy teeth with the gums properly isolated. At Paradise Dental, on the 22nd floor of Burj Al Salam Tower on Sheikh Zayed Road, every whitening treatment starts with an examination in our DHA-licensed clinic, using intraoral cameras to identify exactly what is causing your staining before any gel is applied.

That diagnostic step matters more than most patients expect. Surface stains from coffee, karak, shisha, tea, and red wine respond well to peroxide whitening. Internal discoloration — from an old root canal, certain childhood antibiotics, or enamel defects — often does not, and it is better to know that before you pay for a session rather than after.

Are you a candidate?

You are likely a good candidate if your gums are healthy, you have no untreated decay, and the teeth you want brightened are natural. Two important caveats:

• Restorations do not whiten. Crowns, veneers, and tooth-colored fillings keep their original shade, so visible ones may need updating afterward to match your new color.
• Gum inflammation comes first. If your gums bleed or you have visible tartar, we treat that before whitening. In most cases we recommend a professional cleaning beforehand anyway — polishing removes surface deposits the gel cannot penetrate, and many patients gain a visibly brighter smile from the cleaning alone.

We also defer whitening during pregnancy and breastfeeding as a standard precaution, and we generally do not whiten teeth in patients under 16.

In-chair or take-home?

Many patients combine the two: an in-chair session for the initial lift, then trays at home to maintain the shade between visits.

What to expect on the day

We photograph and record your starting shade, protect your lips and gums with a barrier, then apply the gel in supervised cycles with light activation. A desensitizing fluoride treatment finishes the appointment. The whole visit fits comfortably into an extended lunch break — we are a five-minute walk from World Trade Centre Metro, which is exactly why many of our whitening patients are professionals from the DIFC and Sheikh Zayed Road corridor.

Some temporary cold sensitivity in the first 24–72 hours is normal and settles on its own; a desensitizing toothpaste helps if you are prone to it.

Aftercare in Dubai

For 48 hours after treatment, enamel is more porous and picks up pigment easily. Stick to a "white diet": skip karak, Arabic coffee, turmeric- and saffron-heavy dishes, cola, and berries during that window. One Dubai-specific tip: long hours in air conditioning dry the mouth, and reduced saliva means less natural rinsing of stain-causing residue — keep water with you and sip regularly, which protects your result and your enamel year-round.

A candid note on insurance: UAE dental plans classify whitening as a cosmetic procedure, so it is almost never covered — even though we direct-bill Daman, AXA, Cigna, Bupa Global, and other insurers for medically necessary care.
