Invisalign Refinements Explained
Most Invisalign plans include at least one refinement phase. Here's what that is and why it's normal — not a failure.

What a refinement is
After your initial set of aligners, about 50–70% of cases need a second scan and another short series of aligners to perfect the final position — typically 6–14 additional aligners. This second phase is called a refinement.
Why refinements happen
Each tooth responds slightly differently to aligner pressure. Our plan predicts movement based on average responses, but individual teeth may move a little more or a little less than expected. Refinements correct this.
Common reasons:
- A tooth that didn't fully rotate
- A mild deepening of the bite needed at the end
- A small gap that didn't fully close
- An attachment that debonded early and reduced tracking
What a refinement visit looks like
- Assessment: we compare current teeth to the planned final position
- New scan: takes 5 minutes
- New ClinCheck plan: the orthodontist designs the refinement aligners
- 2–4 week wait: for the new aligners to arrive
- Continue with the new aligners for another 2–6 months
Are refinements an extra cost?
At premium clinics, refinements are included in the initial comprehensive fee — usually 1–2 rounds. Lower-priced clinics sometimes charge per refinement round (AED 2,000–4,000).
Always clarify in your initial quote.
Timing
- Simple refinements: 3–5 additional aligners, 1–2 months
- Moderate: 8–14 aligners, 3–5 months
- Complex: multiple rounds, 6+ months total refinement phase
A case that needs 3+ refinement rounds is usually one that would have been better served by braces or by a different initial plan.
Can you skip a refinement?
If the initial result is close enough to the planned final position and you're happy, some plans skip refinements. But this is often a mistake — small imperfections left uncorrected at the end tend to worsen over months once you stop wearing active aligners.
What improves refinement success
- Wear time: 22+ hours throughout the initial phase avoids tracking issues
- Attachment compliance: if an attachment falls off, report it the same day
- Don't skip weeks: consistent weekly changes keep teeth progressing
- Elastics (if prescribed): wear them as directed
How to tell if a refinement will be needed
At the last aligner of your initial set, we scan and compare to the planned position. We see a colour-coded map:
- Green: tooth is where it should be
- Yellow: small discrepancy, may self-correct with retainer wear
- Red: needs refinement
If you see mostly green with small yellows, you're likely done. If any reds show, we plan a refinement.
Practical decision guide
Orthodontics works by controlled tooth movement over time. The best plan balances alignment, bite correction, gum safety, compliance, and lifelong retention rather than chasing the shortest timeline.
Check this first
- Bite classification, crowding, gum thickness, jaw growth, wisdom teeth, and any history of relapse.
- Whether aligners, braces, expanders, elastics, or a combined cosmetic plan is most predictable.
- The retention plan after treatment, because teeth continue to move throughout life.
When to book sooner
- A child has crossbite, severe crowding, mouth-breathing habits, thumb sucking, trauma risk, or jaw asymmetry.
- Aligners are not tracking, attachments are lost, elastics are not being worn, or teeth feel unusually mobile.
- You are considering direct-to-consumer aligners without in-person periodontal and x-ray assessment.
Topic-specific notes
- For orthodontics, compliance and retention are part of the treatment, not afterthoughts. If aligners, elastics, or retainers are not worn as prescribed, the biology will not follow the digital plan.
Questions to ask at the appointment
- What is the real treatment goal: cosmetic alignment, bite correction, or both?
- How many refinement stages are included, and what happens if teeth do not track?
- Will I need fixed, removable, or combined retainers after treatment?
Dubai patient note
For Dubai orthodontic treatment, ask whether the provider is DHA-licensed as an orthodontist or is a general dentist providing aligners, and confirm what is included in the quoted fee.
