Your First Orthodontic Consultation in Dubai
What happens at a first orthodontic consultation: history, examination, records, what you leave with, questions to ask and how to prepare.

A first orthodontic consultation is mostly about information: what is happening with your teeth and bite, what the options are and what each would involve. Knowing what to expect makes it easier to ask the right questions and compare advice.
Your history and goals
The visit usually starts with a conversation. Expect questions about:
- Your medical history and any medicines you take
- Previous orthodontic treatment, and whether you wore your retainers
- Jaw clicking, headaches, grinding or habits such as nail biting
- What bothers you most: crowding, a gap, protruding teeth, a bite that feels wrong
Your own goals shape the plan. A small concern at the front may suit a short, limited treatment; a bite problem may need full correction.
The examination
The dentist looks at the alignment of each arch, how the upper and lower teeth meet (overjet, overbite, crossbites and open bites), the jaw joints and the profile of the face. Gum health and decay are checked too, because teeth move through bone and inflamed gums or untreated cavities are dealt with before any appliance goes on. The bite problems guide explains the common bite types.
Records that are commonly taken
Orthodontic records typically include:
- Photographs of the face and of the teeth from several angles
- A 3D intraoral scan or impressions, giving an exact model of the teeth and bite
- A panoramic X-ray, showing all the teeth, roots and developing teeth
- A lateral cephalometric X-ray (a side view of the skull) when the relationship between the jaws needs to be measured
These records form the baseline for any plan and let progress be measured later. The dental X-rays guide covers what each type shows.
Digital planning for aligner cases
For clear aligners, the scan is used to build a 3D simulation of how the teeth could move, stage by stage, to a planned finish. It is a planning tool rather than a promise of the result, and it can be adjusted before anything is made. The Invisalign in Dubai guide walks through each stage, and how Invisalign works explains the mechanics.
How long it takes
Allow roughly 45 to 90 minutes, depending on how many records are taken on the day. Some clinics take records at a second, shorter visit once you decide to go ahead.
What the consultation costs
Fees vary. Some clinics include the records in the consultation fee and some charge for them separately, and some credit the fee towards treatment if you proceed. Ask when booking what the fee covers. The braces cost guide explains what drives a treatment quote.
What you leave with
- An explanation of what is wrong and why it matters, or does not
- The realistic options, which may include braces, aligners, limited treatment or no treatment
- An estimate of treatment length and cost, and what the quote includes
- The next steps, including any treatment needed first
Questions to ask
- How complex is my case, and why?
- Is there a simpler alternative?
- What exactly is included in the quoted price?
- How many refinements or extra adjustments are typical for a case like mine?
- What is the retention plan, and are retainers included?
How to prepare
- Bring your insurance card and check whether your policy includes orthodontic cover
- List your medicines and any medical conditions
- Bring recent X-rays or previous orthodontic records if you have them
- Write down your questions and what you would like to change
- For a child, a parent or guardian should attend

Common questions
Do I need a referral from my dentist?
Usually not. You can book an orthodontic consultation directly, although it helps to bring recent X-rays from your regular dentist.
When should a child have a first orthodontic check?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first orthodontic check-up no later than age 7, when problems with jaw growth and emerging teeth can be spotted. An early check does not mean early treatment: many children only need their development monitored.
Practical decision guide
Orthodontics works by controlled tooth movement over time. The best plan balances alignment, bite correction, gum safety, compliance, and lifelong retention rather than chasing the shortest timeline.
Check this first
- Bite classification, crowding, gum thickness, jaw growth, wisdom teeth, and any history of relapse.
- Whether aligners, braces, expanders, elastics, or a combined cosmetic plan is most predictable.
- The retention plan after treatment, because teeth continue to move throughout life.
When to book sooner
- A child has crossbite, severe crowding, mouth-breathing habits, thumb sucking, trauma risk, or jaw asymmetry.
- Aligners are not tracking, attachments are lost, elastics are not being worn, or teeth feel unusually mobile.
- You are considering direct-to-consumer aligners without in-person periodontal and x-ray assessment.
Topic-specific notes
- For cost decisions, compare itemised treatment plans rather than headline prices. The clinically important inclusions are diagnosis, imaging, material choice, temporaries, follow-up, maintenance, and what happens if treatment needs revision.
Questions to ask at the appointment
- What is the real treatment goal: cosmetic alignment, bite correction, or both?
- How many refinement stages are included, and what happens if teeth do not track?
- Will I need fixed, removable, or combined retainers after treatment?
Dubai patient note
For Dubai orthodontic treatment, ask whether the provider is DHA-licensed as an orthodontist or is a general dentist providing aligners, and confirm what is included in the quoted fee.
